Jay Parini is Axinn Professor of English at Middlebury College in Vermont, USA.  He was an undergraduate and postgraduate student at St Andrews between 1968 and 1975, where he was a founder of the St Andrews Poetry Festival, a forerunner of StAnza. He has written five volumes of poetry, including The Art of Subtraction: New and Selected Poems.  His six novels include The Last Station and Benjamin's Crossing. He has written biographies of John Steinbeck, Robert Frost, and William Faulkner. His nonfiction includes Why Poetry Matters (Yale, 2008). He writes regularly for The Guardian and other publications.
