Ian Rankin was born in Fife, and now lives in Edinburgh. A music enthusiast, some of his earliest jottings were lyrics for an imaginary band. The first of his Inspector Rebus novels, Knots and Crosses, was published in 1987; the nineteenth and last, Exit Music, appeared in 2007.  The Rebus books have been translated into twenty-two languages and are bestsellers on several continents.  They have also won a number of awards. Doors Open, a stand-alone thriller, was published in September 2008.
