Alex Salmond

Alex Salmond was born in Linlithgow in 1954 and attended Linlithgow Academy before studying Economics and History at St Andrews University.  After graduating, he worked as an economist for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland (1978–80) and the Royal Bank of Scotland (1980–7); he is now a visiting Professor of Economics at Strathclyde University.  Alex Salmond has been MP for Banff and Buchan since 1987. He was also National Convener for the Scottish National Party between 1990 and 2000, MSP for Banff and Buchan between 1999 and 2001, and leader of the SNP's Westminster MPs from 2001 to 2007. In 2004 he was re-elected as National Convener of the SNP, and in May 2007 was elected as both MSP for the Gordon Constituency and First Minister of the Scottish Parliament.
