Festival Themes

Each festival focuses on two themes which weave around each other to give every StAnza its own unique flavour.

Our first theme in 2010, Myth and Legend offered a more contemporary look at a subject that has long inspired and influenced poets – from classical Greek mythology to the stories of the Old Testament, fairy tales, Celtic and Norse legends. In keeping with this, in his lecture for StAnza 2010, Grevel Lindop revisited Graves’s The White Goddess, and our StAnza Masterclass invited submissions on myth and legend, to be considered by Moniza Alvi whose own most recent collection is Europa.

The second theme was a unique tribute to Festival Director Brian Johnstone who steps down in May 2010 after 10 years in post. We specially invited one favourite artist, plus his personal ‘wish list’ of poets, some new, some favourites from previous festivals, who featured in the special strand of 'Director’s Cut' readings which he introduced.  "As this was my last StAnza as Festival Director," he says, "I was delighted to welcome back so many favourite poets and to have the opportunity to feature new poets whom I’d always hoped to invite to the festival."

Pagan Osborns Sponsors StAnzaNew for 2010

StAnza is delighted to have secured funding support for 2010 from EventScotland, and to announce that Pagan Osborne, one of Scotland's leading legal, financial and property specialists, became the festival’s Principal Sponsor for 2010.  Pagan Osborne was StAnza’s first ever sponsor, from 1998 to 2000, and StAnza welcomes the firm's return after 10 years. Pagan Osborne’s track record in arts sponsorship over the last 10 years is of very high quality and StAnza is honoured and gratified by their renewed sponsorship of the festival in 2010. Their sponsorship included a particular focus on the main evening events at the Byre Theatre, and on the children’s programme. Good things come in threes and StAnza was also delighted to be a flagship event in Fife’s Year of Culture, 2010.
